There are numerous AI start-ups all over the work, each racing to emerge and dominate an area of the market. These startups can have a recruiting advantage in attracting AI related talent: Take a chance working to help us and you could receive a piece of company ownership that might make you rich, but there’s a catch. That is if and only if the company is successful. This yields strong primary motivation for some Human workers.
Now the Big Tech industry's race to embrace and try to totally dominate AI, which has been underway since at least 2011, may leave most tech startups with a limited talent pool, at least for the reasonably rare few prospective employees who genuinely know a lot about AI technology and applications.
The fact is, today the Big Tech companies have already positioned themselves to dominate AI, totally dominate! They are banking on the potentially unlimited commercial window of opportunity that this technology opens for them. The corporate capitalist structure dictates they need to increase shareholder wealth, or they will be fired and replaced by someone else that will.
This includes commercial opportunities in things ranging from facial recognition, digital assistants, voice recognition, language translation, conversational bots, preliminary medical diagnostics, customised health care recommendations, computer vision quality control, traffic flow management, image feature recognition, military autonomous weapons, automated stock selection, high frequency trading, and autonomous vehicles, just to name a few. As Big Tech works to dominate AI, they are offering salaries that are very high, even in an industry that is used to pouring compensation into top talent.
Typical AI specialists, including some PhDs fresh out of university, and a few people with less formal education but a few years of AI experience, can be paid a salary of USD $200k a year or more, a LOT more. A select few have received compensation packages in single to double-digit millions in less than 5 years, and then negotiate their contract, upward. Senior executives involved in managing AI projects can receive extreme compensation packages. In a 2017 court filing, it was revealed that one of Google’s leaders in the self-driving-car division allegedly obtained USD $120 million in incentives. Yes, you read that right. In 2014, Google acquired an AI lab called DeepMind for around USD $650 million with 50 people. In 2016 Google’s financial accounts listed DeepMind "staff costs" at US$138 million with an expanded team of 400 people, or an average USD $345,000 per person.
The concepts of AI, Deep Neural Networks, and various learning algorithms like Backpropagation are not hard to understand. These just require a reasonable understanding of high school level mathematics, but there is a level of AI expertise that requires significantly more complex understanding of systems and processes related to the fields computer science, analog and digital signal processing, and various types of control systems. There is also application specific knowledge which not only requires a deep understanding of AI technologies, but also requires a deep understanding of the Industry to which it is intended for use. Every industry has this experiential knowledge that can be very hard to teach Humans unless they have also worked in the Industry.
If there is anyone trying to build a new AI tech startup, even one that’s massively VC and PE backed, then it is going to need a lot of extremely good management and a bit of luck to compete with Big Tech in AI.
There are tech startups looking for intellectual talent in areas such as physics and astronomys who have the necessary mathematics skills, and looking to international regions such as Asia and Eastern Europe. Tech startups can potentially offer emerging AI talent with relatively attractive salaries in some regions as remote workers, but if they are really good, they may soon get sucked into the AI talent vortex operated by Big Tech. Notably, as AI talent is so hard to find, Big Tech has started looking for remote workers too.
It is extremely important to understand that AI has advanced to a truly extraordinary level and been made publicly available since late 2022. It has traditionally taken many years to train a PhD that deeply understands AI or any other related hard science field that could be applied to AI, however in just a few years time, none of that might even matter.
There are already hundreds of AI Tools that have become publicly available on both a free and commercial basis for Humans to use. These AI Tools provide an unlimited amount of opportunity for Humans to create innovations that provide value to others and themselves. This is the very essence of Human work and the search for ways to do things better. The time is unquestionably now to become more familiar with the new AI Tools as they are invented and made available so that you and those around you may all benefit in some way. It is important to maximise your benefits in this window of opportunity while it remains open to Humans.
Don’t be surprised if in just a few years time, the only real Capability of Intelligence that is needed may be AI that can create better AI.
As a global Human society, we urgently need to prepare for this.
